EDC scales up Ilocos Norte wind power project

Energy Development Corp (EDC) has increased the generating capacity of the Burgos wind power project in Ilocos Norte.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the country's largest geothermal producer said it will install an additional 21 wind turbines in the 87-megawatt (MW) wind farm.

"This raises the total project investment cost to $450 million from $300 million, and once fully completed, increases the total generating capacity to 150 MW from 87 MW," the Lopez-owned EDC said.

The Burgos wind farm is being put up on a 600-hectare site covering three barangays, namely, Saoit, Poblacion and Nagsurot, in Burgos town.

Turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems AS will install the V90-3.0 megawatt turbines for the project.

The project, which broke ground in April last year, is expected to start commercial operations this year. The Burgos wind project marks EDC’s foray into the wind energy business and once completed will be the largest wind farm in the Philippines.
